Turn a PDF into a podcast

Some material goes in better through your ears. Memo turns a PDF into a podcast episode about it, with two hosts explaining it as a conversation, so you can go over a chapter on the bus or on a walk.

The real app, with a sample lecture. Yours shows your own material.

How it works

  1. Open Memo, choose Upload a document and pick the PDF from your phone or computer.
  2. Memo reads every page, including the scanned ones, and works out how the material is structured.
  3. Memo writes the episode's script from the note and starts playing within seconds of it being ready.
  4. Listen once before you read the notes, to get the big picture, and once after, to go over it again.

What you get

  • An episode about your material, in the language it is written in
  • Two hosts talking it through, or one host briefing you
  • Something to listen to on the way to school or at the gym

Tips for the best result

  • Listen before reading to get the big picture, then read the notes for the details.
  • Use it for revision on days when you cannot face a screen.
  • Long PDFs make better episodes one chapter at a time.

What you can upload

Any PDF: lecture handouts, exported slides, textbook chapters, articles. Scanned PDFs work too, because Memo reads the pages as images when there is no text in them.

A very large PDF is best split by chapter. One note per chapter is also easier to revise than one note for a whole textbook.

Questions

Does it read the PDF out word for word?

No, that is what Read aloud is for. The podcast explains the material in its own words, the way two people would talk it through.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. When a page is a picture rather than text, Memo reads the picture, so scanned handouts and photographed books work too.

Does the PDF have to be in English?

No. Memo writes the study material in the language the PDF is in.

Is the podcast a recording of my lecture?

No. It is a new episode about the material, explained as a conversation, so it is shorter and easier to follow than the original.
